Description
The Royal Monastery of Santa María del Parral is located in the Eresma River valley. It was founded in 1447 on the site of a 13th-century hermitage. Henry IV sought to establish a Hieronymite monastery in Segovia and, while still a prince, shared his intentions with Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena and the monarch's chief chamberlain. The various buildings that make up the monastic complex boast more than five hundred years of history. All of the side chapels serve as burials for the local nobility. In the main chapel, a large altarpiece, along with the tombs of Juan Pacheco and his wife María Portocarrero, form a surprising triptych, the layout of which serves as a necessary precursor to that of the church of El Escorial, also belonging to the Hieronymite Order. During the tour, you will be accompanied by Mercedes Sanz de Andrés, a graduate in Art History, specializing in Sacred Art, and holding a diploma in Musical Education. She is a guide of sacred art at the Cathedral of Segovia and collaborates with the Master program "Cathedrals: Art, Didactics, Communication, and Theology" at UNED. She is also part of the teaching staff of Caminos del Románico and serves as a lecturer at the Universidad de la Experiencia. Additionally, she has taught at several universities and in the Hispanic Studies program at the University of Arizona.
