Description
Rodrigo de Tordesillas, master to Henry IV and custodian of the Treasure of the Alcázar of Segovia, delivered to Queen Isabella I between 1475 and 1483 the treasure and jewels accumulated by his predecessor on the throne. Henry’s tapestries, highly valued as jewels, formed an exceptional collection. Notable among them were devotional tapestries, biblical and New Testament scenes, mythological series, woven depictions of chivalric novels and Arthurian cycles, moral allegories, historical chronicles, as well as tapestries illustrating gardens and hunting grounds. Recent research has enabled the identification of surviving pieces from this treasure in national and international collections and established connections with the tapestries collected by the Patronato del Alcázar since 1951 to decorate the royal chambers of the fortress, later dismantled after the 1862 fire. You will explore this fascinating history with guide Concepción Herrero Carretero, PhD in Art History, curator of the Alcázar of Segovia, patron of the Carlos de Amberes Foundation (Madrid), member of the Board of Directors of the Toms Pauli Foundation (Lausanne, Switzerland), and academic of the Royal Academy of History and Art of San Quirce de Segovia.
