Description
The Secret of the Carmes is an artistic and historical complex, but one that is little known behind an austere and ordinary facade. This tour allows you to admire a rich and little-known decor in venues normally closed to the public. Entering the Church of Saint Joseph des Carmes, inaugurated in 1624, is to better understand the historical and tragic relationship to the French Revolution. The tour also includes several rooms at the back of the church, including the sacristy and the seminarians' chapel, as well as the former cloister, now annexed by the Catholic University of Paris. The old convent has had a long life as a home for religious, prison, and then university. The best-kept secret of the venue is at the back: a large wooded and flowered garden, invisible from the street. This haven of peace, which now serves as a walking area for seminarians, witnessed the terrible massacres of September 1792. Other secrets are visible underground: three crypts with very different functions and destinies. They house the tombs of the 19th-century Carmelites and the bones of the clergy massacred during the Revolution. Finally, there is the tomb of a beatified layman, still venerated worldwide today.
