Description
Discover the hidden secrets of the Couvent des Carmes at the Institut Catholique de Paris. This tour takes you through the rich artistic and historical legacy of the former Carmelite convent, which has largely remained hidden from the public. Visit the stunning Saint Joseph des Carmes Church, inaugurated in 1624, and learn about its historical significance and tragic connection to the French Revolution. Explore various rooms at the back of the church, including the sacristy and the seminarians' chapel, as well as the former cloister, now part of the Catholic University of Paris. The convent has served many purposes over the centuries, from a religious community to a prison and finally an educational institution. The most secret part of the complex is a large garden at the back, hidden from the street and providing a peaceful retreat for seminarians. This garden bears silent witness to the horrors of the September 1792 massacres. Other secrets lie underground: three crypts with different functions and histories, containing the tombs of 19th-century Carmelites and the remains of religious murdered during the Revolution, as well as the tomb of a beatified layperson, still venerated worldwide today.
