Kabarett ao Revés

The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro will once again be the territory for a remarkable and moving experience. Under the direction, script, and choreography of Roberto Lima — who also stars alongside a cast of avant-garde TMRJ artists — Kabarett ao Revés combines dance, music, and theater in a simply overwhelming format, especially for those who still cling to the idea of age exclusion in the art of dance.

The initiative was born in May 2025, when soloist dancer Irene Orazem from TMRJ, actively performing for over 70 years, shared with Roberto Lima — a dancer in the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro’s company — her desire to create something special to celebrate her artistic milestone. The result could only be one thing: the work went beyond a tribute and became a stage manifesto about time, the power of art, and the unique presence each body emanates.

With a cast of 60+ artists from the stable companies of Fundação Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, the show breaks prejudices, shatters paradigms, and reaffirms an undeniable fact: art knows no limits imposed by the word “age.” Each gesture, movement, and note challenges the notion of boundaries in the performing arts, revealing instead a singular power that only experience and maturity can offer.

More than a “divertissement” performance, Kabarett ao Revés is a celebration of longevity, creativity, and resilience of artists who have dedicated their lives to the art of performing. With lyricism, wit, and a vibrant aesthetic, the work updates the concept of the Musical Theatre and poses an urgent challenge: why is it still believed that dance has an expiration date?

The show elegantly and inventively weaves together artistic languages, creating a vibrant atmosphere that surprises and moves. It is a celebration, a ritual, a challenge — a work that transforms the stage into a territory of liberation and recognition.

After its premiere on July 19 in Salão Assyrio do TMRJ, the work was awarded the Troféu Regina Ribeiro on August 9, when it also received, by initiative of Councillor Deangeles Percy, a Motion of Praise and Applause approved by the Rio de Janeiro City Council. Then, on August 16, at the invitation of the organization of the XXXI Encontro Fluminense de Dança — Helfany & Jânia & Amigos — a fragment of the show was presented at Teatro Popular Oscar Niemeyer in Niterói.

Kabarett ao Revés is a poetic gesture of resistance, a celebration of the vitality of artists, and a confirmation that the stage always remains a territory of freedom.
