Description
After celebrating the 20th anniversary of Cello Dance and the debut of Cello Kids in its 32nd edition in August, the Rio Cello Festival returns in September for a second stage of free concerts across the city. From September 16 to 20, 2026, five new performances will take place in churches, halls, and cultural spaces as part of the Rio Arts Week program.
Created by cellist David Chew 32 years ago, Rio Cello has brought together an average of 300 participating artists and an audience of over 500,000 people live. In more than three decades, the festival has visited almost 500 venues across Brazil, from Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro to the Christ the Redeemer statue, from the Itamaraty Palace to the Mangueira and Beija-Flor samba schools, always faithful to its mission of bringing concert music to places where it doesn't usually reach.
Ending the year with Rio Arts Week is a special joy: after celebrating 32 years of history in August, we bring Rio Cello into historic churches and concert halls, showing that classical and popular music converse with each other and belong to all audiences, says David Chew, creator of the festival.
On Friday, September 18, at 7:00 PM, Sala Mário Tavares of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro will host Cello Popular, a meeting of three prominent Brazilian musicians: Gilson Peranzzetta on piano, Mauro Senise on saxophone, and David Chew on cello. The concert ranges from the music of Bach to the works of Tom Jobim, blending different musical worlds.
The second stage ends on Sunday, September 20, at 5:00 PM, in Sala Mário Tavares, Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, with Schumann to Villa-Lobos: Latin American Music. The concert features the Lindarte Piano Quartet—Linda Bustani (piano), Michel Bessler (violin), Bernardo Fantini (viola), and David Chew (cello)—in a program that explores different traditions of classical and Latin American music.
