Description

On this walk, which will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day (May 9), we will discover those winged neighbors that often go unnoticed but live in close proximity to us. Our goal is to learn about the relationship between common swifts, red-billed choughs, sparrows, falcons, and other birds with buildings and urban ecosystems, as well as to promote conflict-free coexistence. We will pay special attention to the friendly sparrows, still abundant in our city but in clear decline in others, as well as other birds that accompany us in squares, streets, and gardens, enriching our environment and daily lives. We will talk about their biology and ethology, the shelters they find in buildings, and the importance of conserving their colonies. Swifts, together with red-billed choughs, are a living emblem of Segovia. In fact, it is unique that the city is home to the world's largest colony of red-billed choughs breeding in an urban environment. We will also address topics such as the amazing abilities of swifts, the ultimate exponents of adaptation to aerial life, and the joy they bring with their flights and games among the arches of the Aqueduct, which is home to possibly the largest colony of common swifts in Europe. The Aunatur Team (Association for Environmental Awareness, Nature Projects, and Ecotourism)
runs the Revenga Science and Nature Classroom. They are specialists in urban wildlife and birdwatching for beginners. They highlight the role of birds as indicators of the environmental health of the urban ecosystem and, consequently, of the well-being of those who live in the city.
