Description
"Between two cathedrals", is a special visit that tells the history of the old cathedral, built in front of the Alcazar, and the context of the construction of the current one, away from the fortress. During the tour, a stop will be made at the paintings, sculptures, vestments or the cloister itself, all elements transferred from the old cathedral of Santa Maria and introduced in the new architecture. This tour takes place during 2025 on the occasion of the V Centenary of the construction of the Cathedral of Segovia. The old cathedral was built in front of the Alcázar of Segovia after the reconquest of the city at the end of the 11th century. Since then, it has been expanded and renovated to respond to the growing political and religious importance of Segovia. The year 1520 marks a before and after with the beginning of the War of the Communities that confronted the royalists, troops of King Charles I, against the comuneros, groups of Castilians who rose up against the emperor. The old cathedral, due to its proximity to the Alcazar fortress, suffered damage, which although repairable, was the perfect excuse for the winner of the war, Charles I, to order the construction of a new one. But, this time, away from the Alcazar, to avoid possible clashes and to distance the civil and religious power. Here begins the great adventure of the people of Segovia and the Church to build what will be the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin into Heaven and San Frutos, the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain.
