Description
The religious art within the Cathedral reflects the devotion and faith of the people who contributed to its construction and interior decoration. "Patronages to Adorn the House of God" is a tour that connects the various artistic expressions found in the chapels and current rooms, as well as the prominent patrons who funded them, whose generosity brought these spaces to life. The journey begins with the oldest preserved work from the old cathedral: the 13th-century Pantocrator and Calvary, and follows a timeline through the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods seen in selected chapels and works. These artistic periods were often funded by influential patrons, including noble families, clergymen, and others. It’s not widely known that cathedral councils offered the foundation of chapels to important individuals for their own burial and that of their families. In return, these patrons funded the decoration, hiring top-tier painters, sculptors, and carvers. However, the level of art depended on the financial capacity of the patron. Evidence of this can be seen in chapels like the Immaculate Conception, Santiago Apostle, and the works of Juan de Juni, which stand as prime examples of art, thanks to the generous patrons.
