Description
Thanks to this interesting visit, you will discover how this great Roman civil engineering work, with a total length of 16,186 m from its weir in the Sierra de Guadarrama to the Alcázar, has brought water to Segovia for almost 2,000 years and remains the best-preserved Roman aqueduct in the world. The relationship between the Aqueduct and the Royal Mint House dates back centuries. At the Casa de Moneda —first at the Henry IV mint and later at the Royal Engine, built by Philip II in 1583— coins were minted that carried the aqueduct as one of the security marks, so it can be said that this monument went around the world and became the emblem of Segovia. It is because of this centuries-old relationship that the Royal Mint House complex houses this Aqueduct Interpretation Center (CIA). This center also houses the original sculpture of the Virgin of the Aqueduct, which occupied one of the monument's niches from 1520 to 2015. This work, 1.86 meters high and weighing nearly 800 kilograms, was donated by Antonio de la Jardina, an assayer of the old Casa de Moneda located in the San Sebastián courtyard. The second niche of the aqueduct was occupied by a sculpture of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the mints in Segovia. The Aqueduct Interpretation Center allows you to visualize in detail, through QR codes and augmented reality, the sculptures of the Virgin of the Aqueduct and Saint Sebastian.
