July 🎺🎙️
9, 10 & 11 July - Mark Turner - Special Show
The Sound of Swing & Soul
Mark Turner is a jazz multi-instrumentalist working across saxophone, guitar, and voice, shaped by the rhythmic language of swing and the expressive freedom of blues-based improvisation. His musical approach is grounded in core jazz practice: phrasing that breathes, melody that leads, and improvisation shaped in response to the ensemble rather than apart from it.
Based in Perth, Turner’s development as a jazz musician has been formed through ensemble performance, where interaction and listening define the centre of the music. His work alongside swing-oriented groups such as Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys, as well as appearances with larger ensembles including the Perth Symphony Orchestra, reflects a practice shaped by both discipline and adaptability within jazz contexts. Alongside this, his work has been recognised through multiple music awards, including four performance-related honours and a cabaret award at Perth Fringe World Festival, as well as a nomination for WAM Song of the Year in his debut year as a songwriter and a semi-finalist placement in the Unsigned Only competition.
Within this continuum, Turner works through jazz as a language built on listening. Moving between swing-era repertoire and blues-tinged ballads, he approaches each phrase with space and restraint, allowing rhythm and harmony to guide expression in real time. Across improvisation and standard forms, his focus remains on tone, placement, and the subtle interplay between silence and sound.
Rather than separating identity into roles, Turner works from within the continuity of jazz itself, where voice and instrument exist in the same expressive space. His playing reflects a restrained sensibility shaped by swing tradition, allowing the music to unfold naturally through shared direction, attentiveness, and improvisational conversation.
17 & 18 July - Simone Prattico Trio - Special Show
Rhythms Without Borders
Led by Italian drummer and composer Simone Prattico, the trio brings together pianist Daniel Gassin and Brazilian percussionist Acelino de Paula in a contemporary jazz language shaped by international performance careers and deep-rooted rhythmic traditions. Their music moves through groove, improvisation, and cross-cultural exchange, where structure is constantly reshaped in real time.
Prattico’s career has taken him from Rome to Paris and New York, establishing him as a sought-after drummer across jazz, Brazilian, and global groove contexts. Recognised internationally for his versatility and hybrid rhythmic approach, he has performed extensively across major venues and festivals in Europe, the United States, and beyond, developing a voice defined by rhythmic layering, adaptability, and stylistic breadth within modern jazz practice.
Pianist Daniel Gassin brings a similarly international profile, with award recognition in Australia including finalist and nomination placements in major jazz competitions and songwriting awards, alongside extensive performance activity across Europe, Africa, and Asia. His work as both leader and sideman places him within a wide network of contemporary jazz collaborations, where harmonic sensitivity and improvisational clarity define his contribution.
Together with Brazilian percussionist Acelino de Paula, whose work is grounded in Afro-Brazilian rhythmic traditions and international performance experience, the trio forms a unified but flexible ensemble voice. Their music is built on interaction rather than hierarchy, where percussion, piano, and drums continuously reshape rhythm and harmony through listening, responsiveness, and shared momentum.
24 & 25 July - Charlene Su
A Voice of Elegant Soul
Singaporean vocalist and songwriter Charlene Su brings a contemporary voice shaped by a deep appreciation for the Great American Songbook and the timeless tradition of jazz storytelling.
Known to many for her original pop and R&B releases—including the viral hit I Like Red, which has amassed more than 11 million streams—Charlene’s musical roots began with formal vocal studies at the School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA), where she first developed her affinity for jazz standards and expressive interpretation.
Over more than fifteen years on stage, Charlene has cultivated a style that blends elegance, warmth and emotional honesty. Her appearances as runner-up on The Final One (Season 2) introduced her to a wider audience, while her continued work as a recording artist and live performer has established her as one of Singapore’s distinctive musical voices.
Whether reimagining beloved standards or drawing from modern influences, Charlene approaches every performance with understated sophistication, inviting audiences into songs that feel both familiar and deeply personal.
30 & 31 July - Jacob Khalil - Special Show
The Contemporary Songsmith
Jacob Khalil is a New York–based singer, pianist, and songwriter whose work moves between jazz, contemporary pop, and soul-inflected interpretation. At the centre of his musical identity is the voice at the piano—shaping melody with clarity and emotional directness, while drawing on jazz phrasing and improvisational instinct as a guiding language.
Based in New York City, Khalil has become a consistent presence in the city’s live music landscape, performing across venues such as Birdland Jazz Club, where his work sits alongside both traditional jazz repertoire and contemporary song interpretation. His approach reflects a fluid relationship between genres, where jazz serves less as a boundary and more as a method of expression.
His career includes appearances on major stages and media platforms, including a performance alongside Sam Smith on Saturday Night Live, as well as ongoing engagements across the United States in both club and performing arts settings. Across these contexts, his focus remains on reinterpretation—shaping familiar material through a personal lens grounded in vocal nuance and harmonic sensitivity.
Within his performances, Khalil moves between original songwriting and reimagined standards with a consistent emphasis on storytelling and melodic flow. The result is a musical voice shaped by jazz influence but open in form, where piano and voice operate as a single expressive channel within contemporary performance practice.

40 Years of Friendship, Music and Jazz Adventure
In 1986, Jeremy Monteiro first heard Eugene Pao play at The Jazz Club in Hong Kong and was astonished to discover jazz guitar playing of such world-class depth, elegance and fire right here in Asia.

Since then, Eugene has worked with jazz greats including Randy Brecker, Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd, while Jeremy has recorded and performed with artists such as Ernie Watts, Charlie Haden and Al Foster.

Over a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, she has earned widespread respect for her musical authority, versatility, and consistently compelling performances.
