Description
Founded as a hunting lodge by Henry IV and transformed into a monastery in the 15th century, San Antonio el Real preserves one of the most outstanding Gothic ensembles in Segovia. The visit allows you to tour the church and the two choirs -bass and choir loft-, spaces where monastic music resounded for centuries. In the old rooms of the monastery, valuable illuminated choir books are exhibited, a testimony of the art and spirituality of the Poor Clares. In many of the rooms there are musical relics, of which pianos and sheet music are particularly valuable. The organs complete this journey through the history of convent music. The visit is organized by the Asociación Camino del Asombro, a non-profit organization that manages the monastery and works to restore cultural life to the site through various activities. Its work is based on the principles that defined the monastery in the Middle Ages: as a center of knowledge and learning, as well as a place of silence and recollection.
