Description
This lecture will draw parallels between a selection of prominent contemporary artists who are using their creative practices to bring to light political issues of the present day. Looking at artists from different backgrounds such as British street artist BANKSY and American portrait painter Kehinde Wiley (who was commissioned to paint Barack Obama’s official presidential portrait), we will examine the importance of art in holding a mirror up to society. Other artists that will be discussed include Dana Schutz, who was recently included in the group exhibition ‘Radical Figures’ at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.
