Description
The Art Museum is located in one of the most remarkable buildings in the old town of Girona: the former Episcopal Palace, listed as a Historic-Artistic Suite. It conserves several collections from the Bishopric of Girona, the Diputació de Girona and the art collections of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The collections of Romanesque and Gothic art (with great altarpieces such as the one in Púbol or Cruïlles) and also from the Renaissance (the altarpieces attributed to Joan de Burguña or Pere Mates stand out) as well as works of Catalan painting and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries (with works by Miquel Blay, the Vayreda brothers, Santiago Rusiñol, Prudenci Bertrana, Mela Muter or Celso Lagar, among others). The Art Museum is located in the incomparable setting of the former Episcopal Palace, first documented in the 10th century. The building still preserves several spaces that correspond to its original function, such as the prison, where clerics condemned by the ecclesiastical court served sentences of imprisonment, or the majestic garden, which is open to the public on several occasions throughout the year. Enjoy a guided tour of the Girona Art Museum!
