- Alejandro Cartagena. Ground Rules
Alejandro Cartagena (Dominican Republic, 1977) has built a body of work that, rather than focusing on the “decisive moment,” is articulated through seriality and multiple perspectives. This exhibition, co-produced by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Fundación Mapfre, invites us into photography that serves as a tool to explore many of Mexico’s complex realities. From a critical and humanistic perspective, the photographer addresses key issues such as migration, housing, the border with the United States, and urban transformation.
- Richard Avedon. In the American West, 1979-1984
Richard Avedon (New York, 1923–2004) combined his celebrated fashion career with photographic projects of deep social significance, such as In the American West. The exhibition, organised by the Fondation Cartier-Bresson and Fundación Mapfre, presents the result of five years of travelling through the western United States, where Avedon photographed miners, cowboys, and farmers against an iconic white background that highlights each individual’s identity. Moving away from the idealised vision of the American West, Avedon transformed the photographic portrait into a human testimony and established himself as an essential reference in contemporary art.
