Description
The Musée de l'Orangerie is best known for housing Monet's enormous "Water Lilies". But that is by no means the only reason to visit this gallery! Located in a former orangery in central Paris, within the Tuileries Gardens, this museum is famous for possessing numerous Monet paintings in a large space flooded with natural light. Monet himself donated them to the French state as World War I drew to a close, to contribute to the country's victory. His only condition was that his paintings be kept in a suitable place. The Tuileries' orangery, then unused, was the perfect venue. The Nymphéas series is presented in all its splendour in two oval rooms displaying eight massive canvases specially built to the artist's specifications. He was adamant that the canvases be bathed in natural light to reflect the outdoor nature of his work. The museum is a meditative art space that pays tribute to some of the 20th century's greatest artists such as Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir and Rousseau.
