Balkerne Gate
As the largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain, the Balkerne Gate serves as a grand threshold to Colchester’s ancient past. Originally constructed as a Triumphal Arch in the first century, the edifice was later incorporated into the town’s defensive walls. These flint and tile ruins mark the former main gateway to Camulodunum, once the capital of Roman Britain.
