About Stéphane Tétreault

Stéphane Tétreault, born in April 1993, is a distinguished Canadian cellist celebrated for his virtuosity and deep musical sensitivity. Rising to prominence at a young age, he has become one of the leading figures in today’s classical music scene, earning prestigious honors such as the 2019 Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts and the 2021 Prix Opus for Performer of the Year awarded by the Conseil québécois de la musique. These accolades underscore his significant impact on both national and international stages.

Tétreault’s discography showcases a rich blend of classical repertoire and collaborative projects. His debut album, "Saint-Saëns & Tchaikovsky" (2013), recorded with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra under conductor Fabien Gabel, received critical acclaim including the Editor’s Choice from Gramophone Magazine. He followed this with a celebrated 2016 release featuring Haydn, Schubert, and Brahms alongside pianist Marie-Ève Scarfone, which was named Critics’ Choice and regarded as one of the year’s best recordings. Demonstrating versatility, he partnered with harpist Valérie Milot and violinist Antoine Bareil for the 2017 album "Trios for Violin, Cello and Harp," and later collaborated with Milot on the 2022 album "Transfiguration." His exploration of diverse sounds continued with "Suite Tango," a project with bandoneonist Denis Plante.

Central to Tétreault’s artistry is his historic 1707 “Countess of Stainlein, Ex-Paganini” Stradivarius cello, generously loaned by Sophie Desmarais, which contributes to the rich, resonant tone that defines his performances. Stéphane Tétreault’s unique blend of technical brilliance and expressive depth ensures his enduring influence on the landscape of classical music.
