Experience Description
The body and the soul are traditionally perceived as separate entities within Western culture; however, dance has the potential to unite them. Drawing on Carl Jung, Dr. Beate Peter will argue that dance allows us to access our collective unconscious and, consequently, a more fully discovered self. In tribal societies and shamanic dances, a demon is thought to speak through a possessed individual; in such a case, the dancer could be seen as expressing an internal voice of the self, rather than an external demonic force. According to research, electronic music facilitates a similar kind of dance-discovery of our inner selves. Its musical features allow the release of emotions, thus allowing the body to become the soul and the individual to become the collective.
