Description
The past few years have been transformative for Nate Amos. Between releasing albums that have been game-changers for both his solo career—as This Is Lorelei—and with his band Water From Your Eyes, sold-out shows across multiple continents, and covers of his songs by some of the most influential artists today, the songwriter seems to have firmly found his place.

The Singer in My Band, This Is Lorelei's first album for Matador Records, takes the fundamental elements of the Great American Songbook and twists them into new shapes, strangely familiar and endearingly eccentric at the same time, following Amos's unmistakable style. Written while touring the world presenting the latest releases from both of his projects, The Singer in My Band is the first true "road album" of his discography. "The ideas were incubated while daydreaming in the car, without any instrument at hand," he recalls. "So instead of being at home writing with a guitar or computer, they developed slowly and subconsciously, existing as a kind of intangible entity while looking out the van window."

Box for Buddy, Box for Star, released in 2024, was Amos's first attempt to deliberately write a full solo album. In it, he tackled his newfound sobriety through an ironic journey across different musical personas, always filtered through his genre-blurring perspective. The album received critical acclaim and word-of-mouth success, leading to a deluxe edition with covers and collaborations from MJ Lenderman, Hayley Williams, Jeff Tweedy, Cameron Winter, and many others.

The Singer in My Band took shape in the same apartment where Amos has produced much of his music, though the final touches were made at his parents' home in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Amos handled the recording, production, and performance of virtually the entire album, with a few exceptions: a blistering banjo solo on the title track, courtesy of his father, bluegrass musician Bob Amos, and some vocal contributions from his sister Sarah Amos and partner Al Nardo. "They're three people who had a fundamental impact on what this album was from the start, and the ways they could contribute were things I already had in mind while writing the songs," he explains.

There is a sparseness of means in The Singer in My Band that is uncommon in This Is Lorelei's catalog, harking back to Amos's early songwriting experiences and his lifelong devotion to bluegrass. "To me, it's the most essential form of music," he says, though quickly clarifies that its influence shows up more as a set of principles than a specific sound. "There's a simplicity in bluegrass, very specific rules, and very defined limits: songs have to stand on their own in terms of melody, lyrics, and chord progression."

In an album inspired by the organic, textured production of Gordon Lightfoot, songs like "Billy Came Back" and "The Kid With the Crown" feature choruses built from multiple layers that prove even more striking for the stark minimalism of their verses. The choppy, digital vocal harmonies in "Oh No Now My" seem transmitted from some distant future and captured fleetingly by a degrading setup, shaping the most openly anthemic song on the album, second only to the expansive climax of "Hey Sarah Is It Gonna Rain Forever."

Joey, Billy, Genevieve, Sarah, and the omnipresent Buddy form a kind of Altmanesque ensemble cast populating the album's stories, scattered across unmistakably American settings and places. As narrators, they are not exactly reliable. They move between wild tales and chaotic experiences that are at once strangely specific and slightly blurred, reflecting Amos's own experience over these past years.

"It's funny: when I finished the album, I sent it to my dad and he said it was kind of a 'road beatnik record,' and that made me see it differently," Amos says. "It really is like a collection of chaotic experiences you have while traveling. But they're also little works of fiction with elements of truth in them."

For many years, Amos's This Is Lorelei project was known only to a small circle of creatives in Chicago, the city he moved to in his early twenties, where he produced hundreds of albums and EPs, laying the early foundations of his two prolific projects before relocating to New York. Since then, he has flourished as a polymath of overflowing creativity, equally adept at crafting heartbreak-marked hooks as creating art pop that makes retinas burst.

These are songs about songwriting as a way of life—chaotic, debilitating, transcendent—written by one of the most talented contemporary practitioners of the craft.

Primavera Sound is also enjoyed in venues and throughout the year through Primavera Tours, the curated concert programming that lets you experience the spirit of one of Europe's biggest festivals up close. Get your tickets for THIS IS LORELEI at La Nau!
