He has been called "the new piano superstar" by the British newspaper "Daily Telegraph" and "the Glenn Gould of Iceland" by the American "The New York Times," after a Bach performance that left "Carnegie Hall hypnotized." An album dedicated to this composer earned him a Grammy and the "Album of the Year" award from "BBC Music Magazine" in 2025. Six years earlier, he had been named "Artist of the Year" by "Gramophone," the leading publication in classical music. These are just a few of the accolades of Víkingur Ólafsson, 42, but they are enough to gauge the expectation surrounding his recital in Rio de Janeiro. The program is, as he himself explains, what he would dream of seeing as a spectator: Beethoven's sonatas Op. 90 and Op. 109, a prelude and Partita No. 6 by Bach, and Schubert's Sonata D. 566, a small masterpiece rarely played live. It is one of the rare programs in which there are no "minor" works. Ólafsson has lined up musical monuments in a recital without an intermission, offering an intense experience to his audience.
