See it before it closes! Gavin Brown's enterprise presents "Multiple Personalities" by Rob Pruitt. For this exhibition, his first New York show in four years, Pruitt leaves behind his trademark mixture of pop extravagance and pointed social critique, turning inward to further explore the multiple personalities which have influenced his markedly different bodies of work. Pruitt’s jaded humor takes a backseat to a more introverted take, especially in a series of smooth-all-over compositions—dubbed “Suicide Paintings”—that are featureless except for subtle gradients of skylike color shading vertically from dark to light. What lies beyond the surface of each painting remains ambiguous.
