Description
The Lower Cloister Painting Room of Segovia Cathedral houses an important collection of Flemish and Castilian paintings, the oldest of which date back to the 15th century. In some of these artistic expressions, the painting itself coincides with the representation of the most ephemeral art form: music. The representations of music and dance scenes, known as musical iconography, present in some of the paintings in this exhibition, also form part of the musical wealth of the Cathedral. The information provided in the representations can give us an insight into musical practice and the instruments used in other eras. It can also be of great help in reconstructing some instruments and facilitating an approach to the music and sounds of the past. It can bring us closer to appreciating the social function of musical instruments, how they are played, their manufacture or construction, and other aspects important to organology, the science that studies musical instruments, their identification, classification, and the technical aspects of sound production.
