📍 Memory of Jewish immigration in São Paulo and the cultural formation of the Mooca neighborhood
On January 24, 2026, the exhibition Jewish Mooca: Stories and Memories of a Community reopens to the public, the result of research by Adriana Abuhab Bialski and Myriam Rosenblit Szwarcbart, curated by historian Maria Luiza Tucci Carneiro.
The exhibition brings together photographs, testimonies and historical documents that show the trajectory of the Jewish community in Mooca, contributing to the preservation and appreciation of a cultural heritage still little known in the history of the city of São Paulo.
🏘️ Jewish community, memory and belonging
The exhibition is a development of the Jewish Community of Mooca project, developed since 2023 with the support of community representatives from the neighborhood. Through visual records and personal narratives, the exhibition rescues traditions, ways of life and experiences that marked the Jewish presence in the region.
🏙️ Immigration and urban history
Jewish immigration in São Paulo began in the late 19th century, with the arrival of families who settled in different neighborhoods of the city, including Mooca. Set in a context of industrialization and cultural diversity, the region has been home to an active Jewish community since the early 20th century, with synagogues and social spaces that integrated the local urban fabric.
🌍 Cultural diversity in São Paulo
By revealing how individual and collective histories are intertwined with the formation of the city, the exhibition broadens the understanding of cultural diversity in São Paulo and highlights the importance of memory in the construction of social and urban history.
