Description
"A City Project: The Cathedral of Segovia" is a guided tour that highlights the profound impact of the Segovian people and the influence of royalty on the Cathedral's construction. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption and San Frutos was, first and foremost, a project of faith and devotion to God by the people of Segovia. Over the 243 years between the laying of the first stone in 1525 and its consecration in 1768, this monumental project engaged multiple generations. Throughout this time, kings also left their mark, from Charles I, who initiated the Cathedral's construction, to Charles III, who enlisted his royal architect, Sabatini, to design the High Altar’s altarpiece. This guided tour will take you on a chronological journey through the temple’s heritage, exploring the contributions of Segovians and royalty. Segovia itself can be seen as a political project—a city that reached its peak during the 15th and 16th centuries. However, its decline in the 17th century also left an imprint on the Cathedral's construction. The guides will share captivating details and historical insights that reveal the indelible marks left by Segovia’s people and royalty.
