Description
The Messiah is an English oratorio composed by Georg Friedrich Händel in 1741, with a biblical text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible and the Coverdale Bible, the version of the Psalms included in the Book of Common Prayer. Its premiere was in Dublin on April 13, 1742, and it was performed almost a year later in London. After an initial modest public reception, the oratorio gained popularity and eventually became one of the best known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.
