Description
The secret of the Carmes is an entire artistic and historical complex, though little known behind an austere and banal facade. This visit allows you to admire a rich and little-known decor in venues normally closed to the public. Entering the Church of Saint Joseph des Carmes, inaugurated in 1624, is to better understand the historical and tragic connection to the French Revolution. The tour also offers the chance to discover several rooms at the rear of the church, including the sacristy and the seminarians' chapel. But also the former cloister, today annexed by the Catholic University of Paris. The former convent has had a long life between religious home, prison, and university. The best-kept secret of the premises is located at the rear: a vast garden, wooded and flowered, invisible from the street. This haven of peace, which today serves as a promenade for the seminarians, experienced the terrible massacres of September 1792. The other secrets are visible underground: three crypts with very diverse functions and destinies. They house the tombs of 19th-century Carmelites and the bones of monks massacred during the Revolution. Finally, the tomb of a beatified layman, still venerated worldwide today.
