In 1919 Dziga Vertov made his ideas known in the manifesto "For a non-interpreted cinema" in which he rejected any image that had not been taken from the living. It is the birth of the "documentary film". The great inspiration for Vertov was Berlin, symphony of a city directed by Walter Ruttmann in 1927 where documentary images of Berlin life were joined together without the use of any subtitles. This montage of incomparable virtuosity gives the images all the value of their own meaning, the weight of the most resounding visual expression without the need for words. In response to Ruttmann, Vertov created The Man with the Camera in 1929, which in the vein of Berlin is the portrait of the city of St. Petersburg from dawn to dusk. Both films are a faithful testimony of the cities of Berlin and St. Petersburg, auteur works that, fleeing from any artificial technique, ended up engendering their own language, the language of documentary cinema.
