PROGRAM: Percussion in the 20th Century
The emergence of percussion instruments from the orchestra to the forefront of the stage began in the 20th century. Mentioned are early works where the role of percussion began to expand, such as George Antheil's "Ballet Mécanique" (1923), and Edgar Varèse's "Ionisation" (1929-1931). The program also includes works that laid the foundation for percussion roles, such as Béla Bartók's "Sonata for 2 Pianos and Percussion" (1937). We'll also explore the rapidly evolving repertoire of keyboard percussion works and various percussion instruments used comprehensively in the compositions of composer Choi Jae-hyuk as we journey through the 20th century.
