Description
Hailing from the Irish town of Mullingar, The Academic is an indie rock band characterized by their unmistakable melodies whose debut album, Tales from the Backseat, topped the Irish charts in 2018. Their rapid escalation soon landed them a contract with Universal with whom they released their second album in 2023, Sitting Pretty. Formed when the band members were still teenagers, The Academic became known after opening a concert for the Pixies, which allowed them to amass a large regional following. After signing to Global Publishing in late 2014, they released the songs Different and Northern Boy, which were later included on their 2015 debut EP, Loose Friends. The 2016 Summer single Mixtape 2003 reaffirmed their hooky guitar pop sound, while they continued their evolution towards dream pop with Superlike and Aftertaste in 2019, only to return to their signature style with the release of their second studio album.
