Description
The sumptuous Église Saint-Louis-en-L'Île welcomes you under its vaulted ceiling, inviting you to (re)discover the masterpieces of three musical geniuses. Gabriel Fauré's Requiem in D minor, Op. 48, written at the height of his musical maturity, is one of his best-known works. The Clarinet Concerto in A major K 622 was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791, a few weeks before his death. It is the last of Mozart's forty-three solo concertos, and the only one he wrote for clarinet. The work is divided into three movements in classical concerto form (fast-slow-fast): an allegro, an adagio and a rondo. Gallia was commissioned by Charles Gounod in 1871 for the London World's Fair. Gounod took the opportunity to compose a Lamentation, because Paris' situation resembled that of ancient Jerusalem, destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar II in 597 BC. J. C.
