Description
The Musée de l'Orangerie is best known for housing Monet's immense "Water Lilies". But that's far from the only reason to visit this gallery! Located in a former orangery in the center of Paris, within the Tuileries gardens, this museum is famous for its many Monet paintings, housed in a large space bathed in natural light. Monet himself donated his paintings to the French state as the First World War drew to a close, to contribute to the country's victory. His only condition was that his paintings be kept in an appropriate place. The orangery in the Tuileries Gardens, then unused, was the ideal location. In two adjoining oval-shaped rooms, the Water Lillies series is exhibited on eight massive canvases, in a space designed specifically for the paintings. Monet insisted that the canvases be bathed in natural light to reflect the light and shadows elicited by the paintings themselves. The museum is a space of meditative art that pays tribute to some of the greatest artists of the 20th century such as Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir and Rousseau.
