First United Methodist Church began on October 28, 1849, with Pastor Isaac Owen preaching under an oak tree. A week later, over 70 people gathered in the new Baltimore Chapel at 7th and L streets, on land donated by John Sutter. In 2024, the church celebrated its 175th anniversary.
