About Chico César

Chico César is a celebrated Brazilian singer-songwriter who emerged on the music scene in 1995, renowned for his unique blend of northeastern Brazilian folklore, incisive social commentary, and humor. His musical journey began early; as a child, he worked in a record shop and later performed with the band Super Som Mirim. At sixteen, he moved to João Pessoa to study journalism while participating in the avant-garde poetry and music group Jaguaribe Carne. Eventually, César relocated to São Paulo, immersing himself in the vibrant vanguarda paulista scene alongside influential artists like Arrigo Barnabé and Itamar Assumpção.

After a pivotal European tour in 1991, particularly in Germany, he committed fully to music, forming the group Cuscuz Clã. Their live album "Aos Vivos" (1995) marked his official debut, but it was with the follow-up album "Cuscuz Clã" (1996) that Chico César gained widespread acclaim, winning the Prêmio Sharp for Revelation and the APCA Award for Best Composer. His breakthrough hits "Mama África" and "À Primeira Vista"—the latter featured in the popular Brazilian soap opera "Rei do Gado" and famously covered by Daniela Mercury—secured his place in contemporary Brazilian music.

Chico César's songwriting has attracted legendary artists such as Elba Ramalho, Maria Bethânia, Zizi Possi, Emílio Santiago, and Argentine musician Pedro Aznar, with Bethânia even naming an album after his song "A Força que Nunca Seca." Subsequent albums like "Beleza Mano" and "Mama Mundi" (2000) showcased collaborations with notable musicians including Lokua Kanza, Dominguinhos, and Paulo Moura. Internationally, César has performed at esteemed venues and festivals such as Switzerland’s Montreux Festival, solidifying his reputation as a vital and enduring voice in Brazilian music.
