About Sepultura

Emerging from Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s third-largest city, Sepultura rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as one of the most influential heavy metal bands in history. Founded by brothers Max Cavalera (vocals/guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums), alongside Paulo Jr. (bass) and initially Jairo T. (lead guitar), the band overcame geographic and political challenges during Brazil’s transition from military dictatorship to develop their unique sound. Early influences like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Slayer shaped their initial death metal style, evident in their debut albums "Morbid Visions" (1986) and "Schizophrenia" (1987). The arrival of guitarist Andreas Kisser marked a turning point, helping Sepultura secure a deal with Roadrunner Records and expand their international reach.

Sepultura’s global breakthrough came with "Beneath the Remains" (1989), produced by Scott Burns, which showcased their rapid evolution. Throughout the 1990s, albums like "Arise" (1991) and "Chaos A.D." (1993) combined aggressive thrash and groove metal with socially conscious lyrics, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Their 1996 release "Roots" is often hailed as a masterpiece for fusing heavy metal with indigenous Brazilian percussion and world music elements, highlighting their creative peak.

Following internal strife and the departure of Max Cavalera in 1996, Derrick Green took over vocal duties in 1998, guiding the band through albums such as "Against" (1998), "Nation" (2001), and "Kairos" (2011). Despite further lineup changes, including Igor Cavalera’s exit in 2006, Sepultura continued to innovate with "Machine Messiah" (2017) and the concept album "Quadra" (2020). Known for their dynamic blend of thrash, death metal, and world influences, Sepultura remains a seminal force in heavy metal, collaborating with artists like Devin Townsend and Scott Ian while continually redefining their sound.
