About The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips, formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 by guitarist Wayne Coyne alongside his brother Mark and bassist Michael Ivins, have long stood as pioneers in alternative rock. Starting with underground performances at unconventional venues, the band steadily crafted a distinctive sound that blends psychedelic, experimental, and pop elements. Their breakthrough came with the 1993 album "Transmissions from the Satellite Heart," which featured the unexpected Top 40 hit "She Don't Use Jelly," propelling them into mainstream recognition through memorable festival performances and television appearances.

As the band evolved—eventually becoming a trio with Wayne Coyne as the primary songwriter and vocalist—The Flaming Lips delved deeper into sonic experimentation. Their ambitious four-disc album "Zaireeka" (1997), designed to be played simultaneously on multiple sound systems, exemplified their boundary-pushing ethos. This experimental flair gave way to more lush, emotionally resonant compositions on landmark albums like "The Soft Bulletin" (1999) and "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" (2002). The latter garnered a Grammy Award and achieved gold certification, solidifying their critical and commercial acclaim.

Known for their theatrical live shows and multimedia projects such as the film "Christmas on Mars," The Flaming Lips have also collaborated with diverse artists, including Miley Cyrus and Kesha, further reflecting their artistic versatility. Their influence endures, epitomized by the Oklahoma state government naming "Do You Realize??" its official rock song. Continually reinventing themselves through albums like "The Terror" (2013) and "Oczy Mlody" (2017), The Flaming Lips remain a vital force in alternative music, consistently challenging musical boundaries while captivating audiences worldwide.
