About Epica

Formed in the Netherlands in early 2003, Epica was founded by former After Forever guitarist Mark Jansen, who sought to create a unique operatic metal project. Initially known as Sahara Dust, the band quickly coalesced around the powerful mezzo-soprano vocals of Simone Simons, alongside guitarists Ad Sluijter and later Isaac Delahaye, keyboardist Coen Janssen, bassist Yves Huts followed by Rob van der Loo, and drummers Jeroen Simons and Ariën van Weesenbeek. Their debut album, "The Phantom Agony" (2003), recorded at Germany’s Gate Studio, combined classical choir and string arrangements, laying the foundation for their signature symphonic metal sound.

Epica built momentum with "Consign to Oblivion" (2005), which gained notable chart success in the Netherlands. After signing with Nuclear Blast, the band expanded their ambitious themes on concept-driven releases like "The Divine Conspiracy" (2007) and "Design Your Universe" (2009), the latter solidifying their position with top Dutch chart rankings and the addition of guitarist Isaac Delahaye.

Their international breakthrough arrived with "Requiem for the Indifferent" (2012), debuting on UK and US charts. Celebrating a decade of music, Epica released the live album "Retrospect" (2013), featuring performances with former members. Subsequent projects, including "The Quantum Enigma" (2014), "The Holographic Principle" (2016), and the EP "The Solace System" (2017), showcased their continuous evolution and cemented their status as leaders in the symphonic metal genre. In 2017, their North American tour with Lacuna Coil further expanded their global fan base, underscoring Epica’s lasting impact and innovative spirit in metal music.
