About Christina Pluhar

Christina Pluhar, born in Graz, Austria, in 1965, is a distinguished multi-instrumentalist and conductor celebrated for her innovative contributions to early music and the Baroque repertoire. Beginning her musical journey with guitar studies in Graz, she advanced her expertise by studying lute under Toyohiko Satoh at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, followed by specialized training with Hopkinson Smith at Basel’s Schola Cantorum and Mara Galassi in Milan. Renowned for her mastery of historical instruments—including the Baroque guitar, Renaissance lute, archlute, theorbo, and Baroque harp—Pluhar has performed extensively across Europe, the UK, and Australia, collaborating with esteemed ensembles such as Concerto Köln and Les Musiciens du Louvre.

In 2000, Pluhar founded L'Arpeggiata, a Paris-based vocal and instrumental ensemble that redefined Baroque music by blending traditional Italian Baroque sounds with jazz and folk influences. Their debut album, "La Villanella," featuring works by Giovanni Kapsberger, garnered immediate acclaim and helped establish the group’s distinctive style. Pluhar's rich discography, released on prominent labels like Erato, Virgin Classics, and Naïve, includes highlights such as Monteverdi’s "Vespro della Beata Vergine" (2011) and the Grammy-nominated "Himmelsmusik" (2018). Her recent collaboration with countertenor Philippe Jaroussky on the 2023 album "Passacalle de la Follie" further showcases her continuous artistic evolution.

Beyond performance, Christina Pluhar is a dedicated educator, serving as a Baroque harp professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague since 1999, while leading masterclasses internationally. Her visionary leadership and virtuosity have firmly established her as a pioneering figure in the contemporary early music scene.
