About The Men They Couldn't Hang

Formed in 1984 amid the lively squatting and busking scene of Shepherd’s Bush, London, The Men They Couldn't Hang swiftly emerged as a defining force in British folk-punk. Their energetic debut supporting Poguemahone at Camden’s Electric Ballroom set the tone for a passionate national following, fueled by rousing live performances and sharply topical songwriting. Over the ensuing four decades, the band built a dedicated fanbase with their blend of raucous folk melodies and socially conscious lyrics.

Touring extensively across Europe, North America, and unexpected destinations like Iceland, Egypt, and Estonia, The Men They Couldn't Hang have become festival mainstays at renowned events such as Glastonbury, Roskilde, Reading, Pinkpop, and the Cambridge Folk Festival. Their career highlights include sharing stages with iconic musicians including David Bowie, Van Morrison, Bo Diddley, The Smiths, and Elvis Costello, cementing their reputation within the British folk rock canon.

Despite the tragic loss of founding member Stefan Cush during the COVID-19 lockdown, the band honors his memory through ongoing creative output and vibrant live shows. Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2024 with special tours and a "Best of" compilation, they demonstrated their enduring vitality. This milestone was followed by the release of a new studio album in 2025, proving that The Men They Couldn't Hang continue to ignite audiences with their fierce spirit and timeless appeal.
