About Vieux Farka Touré

Vieux Farka Touré, born in 1981 in Niafunké, Mali, is a renowned singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has emerged as a compelling figure in contemporary world music. As the second son of the legendary Ali Farka Touré, Vieux initially faced his father’s reluctance toward a musical path, who encouraged a military career instead. Undeterred, he secretly picked up the guitar in 2001 while studying at Bamako’s National Arts Institute. His talent flourished under the mentorship of kora master Toumani Diabaté, eventually earning his father’s blessing before Ali’s passing in 2006.

Vieux Farka Touré’s self-titled debut album (2007) marked his arrival on the global stage, featuring some of his father’s final recordings and blending traditional Malian desert blues with diverse influences like American rock, jazz, Latin rhythms, and pop. His subsequent albums, including "Fondo" (2009), "The Secret" (2011), and the politically charged "Mon Pays" (2013), showcased his evolving sound and genre-crossing ambitions. Vieux has collaborated with notable artists such as Dave Matthews, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, and Israeli pianist Idan Raichel. Together with Raichel, he formed the acclaimed Touré-Raichel Collective, releasing two multilingual albums that highlight his innovative spirit.

In 2017, Vieux released "Samba," a nod to his childhood nickname, followed by the intimate "Les Racines" (2022). That same year, he teamed up with the Texas trio Khruangbin for "Ali," a heartfelt tribute to his father’s enduring legacy. Through his dynamic performances and boundary-pushing collaborations, Vieux Farka Touré continues to honor Malian musical traditions while expanding his influence worldwide.
