About Lucy Railton

Lucy Railton is a pioneering British cellist, composer, and cross-disciplinary artist celebrated for her innovative fusion of acoustic and electronic music. Born and trained in both the UK and the US, she studied at Boston’s New England Conservatory before graduating from London’s Royal Academy of Music in 2008. Shortly after, Railton quickly established herself as a vital force in contemporary experimental music, founding the new music series Kammer Klang and co-founding the London Contemporary Music Festival—platforms dedicated to showcasing both contemporary and avant-garde compositions.

Her 2018 solo debut, "Paradise 94," released on Modern Love, marked a bold exploration of amplified cello entwined with industrial noise, featuring collaborations with notable artists like Beatrice Dillon and Kit Downes. This was followed by "RFG Inventions for Cello and Computer" (2020), a groundbreaking collaboration with EMS Synthesizer co-founder Peter Zinovieff released on PAN, and the improvisational "Lament in Three Parts" on Café Oto’s TakuRoku label. Her composition "Forma" was featured on a split LP through the Portraits GRM series, connecting the Austrian label Editions Mego with the French electro-acoustic institution INA GRM. Most recently, Railton’s album "Blue Veil" on Ideological Organ showcases a shift to purely acoustic textures, highlighting her evolving artistic journey.

Beyond recordings, Lucy Railton is renowned for her dynamic collaborations across dance, film, installation, and performance art. She has worked with artists such as Kali Malone, Soundwalk Collective featuring Patti Smith, the Maryanne Amacher Foundation, and choreographer Akram Khan, continually pushing the boundaries of sound and artistic expression. Her versatility and adventurous spirit have firmly cemented her reputation as a trailblazer in contemporary music.
