About Emperor X

Emperor X is the indie folk project of Chad R. Matheny, a Florida-born musician whose experimental sound has evolved since the late 1990s. Launching his career with the debut album "The Joytakers' Rakes/Stars on the Ceiling, Pleasantly Kneeling" (1998), Matheny’s music stands out for its lo-fi aesthetic, surreal lyrics, and inventive arrangements. Inspired at a young age by a Casio SK-1 keyboard and later refined through his use of a Tascam 4-track recorder, he merges quirky storytelling with elements of folk and electronic music.

Despite becoming legally blind after a 1994 car accident, Matheny cultivated a devoted following through relentless touring across the U.S. and Europe, often traveling by Greyhound bus or public transit with nothing but his guitar and pedals. His grassroots approach has included unique promotional ideas such as burying physical copies of his albums in geocache locations. Notable releases include "Tectonic Membrane/Thin Strip on an Edgeless Platform" (2004), the critically acclaimed "Western Teleport" (2011), and "Oversleepers International" (2017), which deeply reflects his personal battle with cancer and observations on European healthcare after relocating to Berlin in 2012.

Emperor X’s discography also features "The Orlando Sentinel" (2014) and "Nineteen Live Recordings" (2013), capturing the intimate energy of his live shows. Through continual innovation and heartfelt lyricism, Emperor X remains an influential and enduring presence in indie music, blending heartfelt narratives with experimental soundscapes.
