About RP Boo

RP Boo, born Kavain Space, stands as a seminal figure in the evolution of Chicago’s underground dance scene and is widely credited as the pioneer of footwork. This genre, an electrifying offshoot of Chicago house, is defined by its rapid-fire beats, thunderous basslines, and fragmented, syncopated samples. Emerging from the vibrant House-O-Matics crew during the 1990s, RP Boo began crafting his signature sound using drum machines like the Roland R-70. His 1997 single, "Baby Come On," which notably samples Ol' Dirty Bastard, is often celebrated as the first official footwork track, laying the groundwork for a new sonic movement.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, RP Boo released influential tracks on iconic labels such as Dance Mania and contributed to cult classics like "11-47-99"—a Godzilla-sampling production credited to DJ Slugo but actually crafted by RP Boo—that helped propel footwork beyond Chicago’s borders. His 2007 mixtape, "Dude Off 59th Street," showcased collaborations with fellow footwork luminaries including DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, and Traxman, cementing his role as a foundational innovator.

International recognition came in the 2010s when British label Planet Mu championed footwork globally, releasing his compilation "Legacy" (2013), which gathered rare and unreleased tracks spanning his career. RP Boo continued to evolve his sound with albums like "Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints" (2015), the fully realized studio album "I'll Tell You What!" (2018), and "Established!" (2021), which revisited the raw roots of juke and Chicago house. Marking a decade since his breakthrough, "Legacy, Vol. 2" (2023) compiled archival gems from the early 2000s, reaffirming RP Boo’s enduring influence as the visionary architect of footwork.
