About African Head Charge

African Head Charge is a pioneering dub-reggae collective formed in London in 1981 by legendary producer Adrian Sherwood and master percussionist Bonjo Iyabhinghi Noah. Rooted deeply in Rastafarian spirituality, Bonjo’s vision and skillful leadership have shaped the group’s unique sound—an innovative fusion of tribal African percussion, roots reggae, psychedelic dub, and modern electronic elements. Starting as a studio experiment, African Head Charge quickly evolved into a cult favorite, known for blending visceral djembes, guitars, drums, keyboards, and powerful vocals with heavy electronic sampling.

Over the years, the collective has released thirteen albums that explore this immersive soundscape, pushing the boundaries between traditional rhythms and contemporary psychedelia. Their music weaves primal African drumming with thundering basslines and reggae-inflected grooves, creating an intoxicating and hypnotic listening experience that has earned them a dedicated following worldwide.

African Head Charge’s reputation is bolstered by electrifying live performances featuring an eight-member lineup of world-class musicians.
