About Have a Nice Life

Have a Nice Life is a Connecticut-based experimental duo formed in the mid-2000s by Dan Barrett and Tim Macuga. Known for their unique blend of droning shoegaze, industrial-tinged post-punk, and gloomy ambient soundscapes, the pair initially performed sparse, melancholic compositions at local open mics before shifting to lo-fi home recordings. Their self-released 2008 debut double album, "Deathconsciousness," issued through their own Enemies List Home Recordings label, became a cult classic despite receiving no traditional promotion. The sprawling record weaves ethereal textures and dark-hued post-rock, gradually building a loyal following through grassroots internet communities like Sputnikmusic and 4chan’s /mu/. This underground acclaim eventually expanded, catching the attention of emo-rapper Lil Peep, who sampled the album’s opening track.

Building on this momentum, Have a Nice Life released the "Time of Land" EP in 2010 and collaborated with the West Coast label The Flenser for their 2014 follow-up, "The Unnatural World," which intensified their goth and noise-driven aesthetic. Their 2019 album "Sea of Worry" marked a slight shift toward a more energetic, yet still haunting, approach. Throughout their career, Barrett and Macuga have also operated the Enemies List label, fostering similarly dark and experimental artists within the doom and post-punk realms. Have a Nice Life remains a seminal force in underground experimental rock, championing despair and brooding atmospheres with a lasting impact on the genre.
