About The Lewisham And Greenwich NHS Choir

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir is a unique vocal ensemble formed in 2012 from NHS staff across a variety of roles, including doctors, nurses, porters, and administrators. Brought together by choirmaster and broadcaster Gareth Malone during the BBC series *The Choir: Sing While You Work*, the choir aimed to build camaraderie among workplace teams through music. Although they narrowly lost the competition’s final to a choir from Severn Trent Water, their spirited performances continued to resonate within hospitals and local communities throughout greater London.

The choir's defining moment came in December 2015 with the release of their charity single "A Bridge Over You," a heartfelt mash-up of Simon & Garfunkel’s "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and Coldplay’s "Fix You." This powerful blend topped the UK Christmas charts, notably defeating major artists like Adele and Justin Bieber, the latter of whom publicly encouraged his fans to support the NHS ensemble. The song captured widespread public sentiment during a period of intense debate over junior doctors' contracts, symbolizing national appreciation for the healthcare service.

Building on this success, the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir released their debut album, *Something Inside So Strong* (2016), featuring stirring covers of classics by artists such as Carole King, Bill Withers, Sting, and Labi Siffre. Through their music, the choir has not only raised funds for charitable causes but also uplifted spirits, embodying the resilience and dedication of the NHS community.
