About Steve Ashley

Steve Ashley has been a cornerstone of the British folk music scene for nearly four decades, renowned for his evocative songwriting and spirited performances. Beginning his musical journey in the 1960s, Ashley first emerged as a student of graphic design at Maidstone, where he co-founded the Maidstone Folk Club alongside Peter Bellamy. His early career was marked by collaborations with influential figures like Shirley Collins on the seminal 1969 album "Anthems in Eden" and a pivotal role in the Albion Country Band. Although the band's self-titled album was recorded in 1972, it remained unreleased until 1974, underscoring the often turbulent folk industry of the era.

Ashley’s solo debut, "Stroll On" (1974), earned immediate acclaim as Folk Review’s Contemporary Folk Album of the Year, followed by "Speedy Return" (1975), which featured the notable single "Old Rock & Roll" and contributions from members of Fairport Convention. His collaborations extended further to artists such as Dave Pegg and Chris Leslie, while his deft harmonica work enriched recordings by Richard Thompson and others.

From the 1980s onwards, Ashley’s music took a distinctly political turn, producing ardent anti-nuclear works like "Demo Tapes" (1981) and "More Demo Tapes" (1983), aligning with the UK Peace Movement. Though he announced his retirement in 1992, Ashley periodically returned with projects including the soundtrack for the documentary "Stable Lads" (1995) and the album "Everyday Lives" (2001). Praised by Melody Maker as "one of the finest singer/songwriters in Britain," Steve Ashley’s enduring influence and vibrant artistry continue to resonate within the folk community and beyond.
