About Les Négresses Vertes

Les Négresses Vertes emerged from Paris in late 1987 as a unique collective of family, friends, and lovers—many with little to no musical experience—who transformed themselves into a lively and internationally recognized band. Their sound defied genre boundaries by blending punk energy with vibrant Latin rhythms, raï influences, and traditional folk music, crafting an infectious dance style that captivated audiences worldwide. This eclectic fusion set them apart in the French alternative rock scene, making them a dynamic and joyous force from the late 1980s through the early 2000s.

Tragedy struck in 1993 when Noël Rota, known as Helno, the charismatic frontman and primary lyricist, died after struggling with addiction. Helno’s passing was a turning point for Les Négresses Vertes, but the band pressed on with guitarist and vocalist Stéfane Mellino, an Algerian-born Paris resident who had balanced early musical efforts with his family’s fishing net business, stepping into a leadership role. Alongside him, Matthias Canavese— the youngest member with a background in circus arts and a flair for energetic performances—became a prominent voice in the group. Multi-instrumentalists such as Jean-Marie Paulus, Abraham Sirinix, and Jo Roz enriched the band’s evolving sound with guitar, trumpet, trombone, piano, and more.

Over more than a decade, Les Négresses Vertes built a legacy marked by spirited live shows and unforgettable hits, solidifying their place as trailblazers in genre-crossing French music. Their vibrant blend continues to resonate with fans around the globe, embodying a timeless celebration of cultural fusion and musical adventure.
