About Old 97's

Formed in Dallas in 1993, Old 97's have emerged as one of the most enduring and influential bands in alternative country. Founded by Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond, who began collaborating in the late 1980s, the duo soon completed their lineup with guitarist Ken Bethea and drummer Philip Peeples. Their sound masterfully blends power pop hooks with traditional Texas country twang, a combination that has defined the alt-country genre for decades.

The band first gained national attention with their debut album, "Hitchhike to Rhome" (1994), followed by the critically acclaimed "Wreck Your Life" (1995), both released on Bloodshot Records. These early works showcased Miller’s captivating storytelling, balancing vulnerability with swagger. Old 97's major-label breakthrough came with "Too Far to Care" (1997) on Elektra Records, which featured rock-infused country anthems and led them to perform at prominent festivals like Lollapalooza.

Despite critical praise across albums such as "Fight Songs" (1999) and "Satellite Rides" (2001), widespread mainstream success eluded the band, prompting a return to independent labels. Throughout challenges—including serious health setbacks for Peeples and Bethea—Old 97's continued to evolve their sound, releasing energetic works like "Most Messed Up" (2014) and their twelfth studio album, "Twelfth" (2020).

Their 2024 release, "American Primitive," recorded spontaneously with producer Tucker Martine and featuring collaborations with luminaries like Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Scott McCaughey, exemplifies the band’s commitment to organic creativity. With a loyal fan base and fiery live shows, Old 97's remain pioneers who honor their Texas roots while pushing the boundaries of alternative country music.
