About Girls Against Boys

Girls Against Boys is a post-hardcore band that originated in Washington, D.C. in 1988, known for their distinctive dual-bass sound and frontman Scott McCloud’s unique sing-speak vocal style, often compared to Mark E. Smith of the Fall. Their music blends energetic intensity with a gritty edge, drawing clear inspiration from seminal D.C. punk bands like Fugazi, which helped shape their strong songwriting approach. The band made their debut with the album "Tropic of Scorpio" (1989) on the Adult Swim label before signing with the influential indie Touch & Go Records, where they released the critically acclaimed "Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby."

Throughout the mid-1990s, Girls Against Boys built momentum with albums like "Cruise Yourself" (1995) and "House of GVSB" (1996), solidifying their position within the underground post-hardcore scene. Their 1998 major-label effort, "Freak*on*ica" (Geffen), brought them wider commercial exposure, despite mixed reviews from critics. After a hiatus, the band returned with "You Can't Fight What You Can't See" (2002) on Jade Tree Records, before briefly disbanding in 2003.

Girls Against Boys reunited in 2005 for European tours, welcoming bassist John Schmersal from Enon. They expanded their international reach with performances across Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, Poland, and Russia. In 2013, the band surprised fans by releasing "Ghost List," their first new material in over a decade, reaffirming their lasting impact and influence on post-hardcore and indie rock music.
